UMM QAIS MAP

Service Design

Umm Qais map was developed for Baraka Destinations, the company established sustainable local touristic experiences within the local community. The map was developed to create independency for the tourists to roam around the village exploring Baraka Products and other local businesses.

The map worked as a bridge between tourists and the village, also as an informative marketing tool to encourage travelers explore beyond the archeological site of Gadara and engage more with the local community to learn about the northern Jordanian culture.

The map was phased out into 4 parts. Research – Usability  – Design – Production.

I moved to the village for couple of months to develop the map manually without using drowns due to its geo-political location. During the development of the first draft I engaged heavily with the local community to capture the vibe and reflect their story through illustrations and colors.

After the development of the first draft I tested it usability with tourists and colleagues to test its accuracy. Then implemented the five design principles of cartography, which are legibility, visual contrast, figure-ground organization, hierarchical organization and balance.

The process was concluded with testing different sustainable light paper and finding the best printing press. 1000 copies were printed, distributed and used within the first year.
